I created the Beginning Mobile Game Development course (commonly referred to as the Froggy course) several months ago and it spawned an invitation from InfiniteSkills.com to create a Corona SDK tutorial for them.
That was finished in mid-April and became available a couple weeks ago. So now I have two courses that are each aimed at beginners and I’ve received multiple queries about which one to get.
The best answer, of course, is to get both of them! 😉
But in case you’re pinching pennies, let me break each one down just a little bit (nutshell version)…
First of all, both courses cover the same topics. In fact, I used the Froggy course as the outline for the Infinite Skills course. But instead of focusing on building one app (Froggy Went A Hoppin’) I covered the core techniques and then showed how to use them in building three different mini-apps: a space shooter, a physics-based game, and a puzzle game.
Both courses will take you from rank beginner to being able to create your own simple games with Corona SDK.
The biggest differences are these:
- The Froggy course is about 1/3 the price of Infinite Skills.
- The Infinite Skills course is available as download or DVD.
- The editing wizards at Infinite Skills made me look SO good!
That last one is really a big deal. While I do cut out the worst of the “um, er, ah” things in my videos, for the most part I consider them as if you were looking over my shoulder.
But the Infinite Skills people take raw footage like that and do hard-core editing so the result is a professional product. When I finally saw the result my first thought was, “Crap! Now my course isn’t the best anymore!” — referring to Froggy.
TL;DR There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Froggy course — I’m still proud of it — and both are 8+ hours of video instruction. But I think the Infinite Skills course is better.
