There have been many changes in the courses over the last few months and more are coming.
If you’re looking for the new Biz App course with new widgets, or the new Froggy course with updates, that probably won’t happen — not exactly. As I discovered, it’s not a great idea to create a course that works on a single app spread over the entire course. Because when Corona Labs changes something, *everything* in the course has to change. Talk about depressing! 🙁
Instead, for the biz app course I created a set of tutorial videos covering the v2 widgets and I’ll be breaking more of the Biz App course down into bite-sized chunks. So there will be a separate course on database access, one on dealing with external data like JSON and XML, one on using Composer, etc.
They will each stand alone, but will all be available under the “Biz App” umbrella. Besides making it easier for me to keep things updated when changes happen, it will also be easier for individuals to focus on exactly what they want to learn right now.
I’ll also be doing the same thing with the Beginning Mobile Game Dev course (commonly referred to as the Froggy course). While working on Froggy from beginning to end was fun, it’s not a good way to “future proof” the courses.
While the courses will be broken up, I intend to create a final “let’s mix it all together” tutorial that shows how to take what you’ve learned and use the pieces to make a game or business app. Since the details of each technique will have already been covered in the separate tutorials, it will be valid longer even if something in the SDK changes.
If you currently have access to one of the full courses, you’ll also have access to the “parts” as they are added to the site. And the current courses will stay online if you want to access them — they’ll just be moved to the background.
Basically, you’ll end up with more tutorials presented in a better way (better for me and for you). And like I said, those changes have already started happening.
Here’s a list of the new tutorials in rough order of anticipated completion. Most of them will have some (or all) new videos, others will be put together using existing videos.
- Scene Management with Composer (for both biz apps and games)
- The New v2 Widgets (done for biz, but need to add some game-focused videos)
- Saving & Loading Data, Including SQLite Database (for both biz apps and games)
- Dealing with External JSON and XML Data (focused on biz apps)
- Using Plugins with Corona SDK (for both biz apps and games)
There will be more tutorials than that, but those are the one that are the most needed right now.
As I write this I’m getting over a bout of strep throat and am breaking into coughing fits at the drop of a hat so it will probably be another week before the first of the above tutorials hits the site. Right now I’m finalizing the sample code and figuring what parts are missing in order to make the Mastering Corona SDK site an overwhelming value.
